The details

In a lively atmosphere on the JNU campus during the students’ union election counting, there was a display of sloganeering with dafli and dhol.

The election results saw the United Left panel emerging victorious by winning three out of the four posts of the JNUSU, with BAPSA securing one post.

Notably, the RSS-affiliated ABVP lost all posts, albeit by a slim margin of a few hundred votes.

The United Left panel, comprising AISA, SFI, DSF, and AISF, celebrated their victory with Dhananjay of AISA clinching the president’s post with 2,598 votes.

Of significance is the fact that Dhananjay is the first Dalit candidate in the past two decades to secure the presidential post.

Priyanshi Arya from BAPSA secured the general secretary post with 2,887 votes, while Avijit Ghosh from SFI won the vice-president post with 2,409 votes.

Mo Sajid from AISF emerged victorious in the joint secretary post with 2,574 votes.

However, the Left candidate for general secretary, Swati Singh, faced disqualification.

BAPSA maintained that its candidates were contesting individually, emphasizing their commitment to individual candidacy.

The ABVP, aiming to break the Left stronghold at JNU, faced defeat in this election.

The election itself marked a significant event after a four-year hiatus due to the pandemic and PhD admissions.

Approximately 5,600 students cast their votes, with a notable proportion being first-time voters, indicating a renewed interest and participation in the electoral process within the university.
