Mexico and Algeria See Growth in Solar Energy Capacity

The Energy Regulatory Commission in Mexico reported a significant increase in distributed-generation facilities in 2023, with solar energy dominating the contracts. In Algeria, Sonelgaz signed contracts for the construction of 20 solar projects with a cumulative capacity of 3 GW, in line with the country’s goal to deploy 15 GW of solar energy.

At a glance

  • Total installed capacity in Mexico reached 3,361 MW by the end of December 2023
  • Solar energy dominates with 99.33% of the total capacity
  • 76,101 new contracts were signed in 2023, the highest since 2007
  • Jalisco leads in Mexico with the most interconnection contracts and highest installed capacity
  • Algeria signed 19 contracts for 20 solar projects with a cumulative capacity of 3 GW

The details

Mexico’s Energy Regulatory Commission has released statistics on distributed-generation facilities with capacities of less than 0.5 MW for the year 2023. The total installed capacity in Mexico reached 3,361 MW by the end of December 2023, with 411,085 registered interconnection contracts contributing to this capacity.

Solar energy dominates these contracts, accounting for 410,810 contracts equivalent to 3,339.31 MW, making up 99.33% of the total capacity.

In 2023, 76,101 new contracts were signed, amounting to 728.93 MW. These figures represent the highest number seen since 2007, when the regulator began tracking distributed generation.

Interconnection Contracts and Installed Capacity

Interconnection contracts saw a 22.7% increase, while installed capacity rose by 27.7% compared to the previous year.

Jalisco leads Mexico with 74,261 interconnection contracts and the highest installed capacity of 515.26 MW in distributed generation.

Following Jalisco are Nuevo León with 46,418 contracts and 355.69 MW, Chihuahua with 32,979 contracts and 227.55 MW, and Guanajuato with 21,432 contracts and 213.69 MW.

Moving to Algeria, representatives of the state-owned utility Sonelgaz recently signed 19 contracts to construct 20 solar projects with a cumulative capacity of 3 GW. These projects were awarded to a mix of local and foreign companies, and the signing ceremony was attended by Minister of Energy Mohamed Arkab and Minister of Environment Fazia Dahlab.

Solar Projects in Algeria

The capacity allocated in these projects is part of a 1 GW scheme launched in late 2021 and a 2 GW tender initiated in February last year.

The 2 GW tender aims to deliver 15 PV projects in 12 provinces and attracted 20 bidders with 77 offers.

Meanwhile, the 1 GW scheme involves the construction of five solar projects in five provinces, with capacities ranging from 50 MW to 300 MW.

These initiatives in Algeria align with the country’s goal to deploy 15 GW of solar energy and eventually phase out the use of natural gas.

Sonelgaz is also planning to launch another 3 GW procurement exercise later this year.

As of the end of 2021, Algeria had installed approximately 423 MW of solar capacity, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
