A recent survey conducted by Datafolha on March 19 and 20 found that 71% of Brazilians believe that democracy is the best form of government.

However, 18% of the population appears indifferent to the type of government the country has, while 7% believe that under certain circumstances, a dictatorship could be preferable.

Despite the majority of Brazilians supporting democracy, there is a level of dissatisfaction with the current democratic system.

This survey marks the thirtieth time Datafolha has measured the country’s democratic disposition with the historical series beginning in September 1989, before the first direct presidential election following the end of the military dictatorship in 1985.

Support for democracy has been on a decline since reaching a peak of 79% in October 2022. Interestingly, this decline in support seems to coincide with then-President Jair Bolsonaro’s campaign against the electoral system.

The data from the survey reveals important insights into the attitudes of Brazilians towards democracy
